embodies four decades of contribution
to Creative Music and Music Education
Internationally.
DBA NYC Guitar Studio,
or Sten's Guitar Studio, in Manhattan's
Times Square and in Ridgewood, Queens
caters to educational projects, organizations
and schools in New York City and elsewhere
signed Sten Hostfalt, ever since 2006.

Based on four decades of activity as a predominantly creatively inclined musician, performer, composer, arranger, producer, independent record label proprietor and music educator, on the U.S. East Coast since 1989, in New York City since 1994 and internationally since 1977. And after decades of documented professional freelance engagements alongside leading musicians of our time, Sten Hostfalt registered his NYC music production business Sonus Rex in 2006, to facilitate the release of nine subsequent original recordings and hundreds of concerts as a leader of groups and projects on the NYC, U.S. East Coast and International concerts as a leader. An activity mirrored by its educational divison NYC Guitar Studio-AKA Sten's Guitar Studio. A creatively committed
multi-genre facility, known as one of few resources anywhere to offer systematic studies of microtonal music for the traditional 6-string, 12-fret guitar.

As a professional music educator Mr Hostfalt is affiliated with and active member of The National Association for Music Educators NAFME and The Society for Research in Music Education. And as a musician, composer and producer, with The American Federation of Musicians, AMF Associated Musicians of Greater New York, Local 802. And Broadcast Music Inc ( BMI ).

In addition to also being a current teaching faculty member of New York Jazz Academy (since 2009), Mr. Hostfalt is a former teacher at The Royal College of Music in Stockholm (2001-05), lecturer at New World School of The Arts (2010) Miami-Dade College, FL and Berklee College of Music (2006) and a New England Conservatory (MM '95, GD '94) and Berklee College of Music ('BM '92) honors and outstanding musicianship award recipient, emissary and alumnus.

Sten Hostfalt ACADEMIC EDUCATOR PROFILE
A former ( 2001-05 ) teaching faculty member of one of the world's oldest conservatories, The Royal College Of Music in Stockholm, Kungliga Musikhogskolan Sten Hostfalt holds a Master of Music Degree in Composition and a Graduate Diploma in Jazz Performance from New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied privately with Jimmy Giuffre, Paul Bley and Mick Goodrick, and theory with George Russell, classical tonal composition with Malcolm Peyton, twelve-tone music with James Hoffmann, mathematical systems in music with Pozzi Escot, orchestration with Lee Hyla, Indian music with Peter Row and microtonal music with Joe Maneri.

As a NEC big band member, he appeared in concert with legendary Jazz composer, arranger and pianist Clare Fischer. As a New England Conservatory emissary due to academic excellence, a member of the 1992-93 NEC Honors Jazz Ensemble, he participated in representative educational concerts and academic community outreach music projects.

He received his Bachelor Of Music Degree ( Cum Laude, Outstanding Musicianship Award ) from Berklee College of Music where he apprenticed in Phil Wilson's 'Rainbow Band' before succeeding guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel to appear alongside classmates Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Melvin Butler and Scott Kinsey, as the guitarist in one of the last editions of Herb Pomeroy's legendary 'Recording Band' - known as Berklee's most prestigious ensemble and 'inner circle' famous for the 'Jazz in The Classroom' recordings of the 1950's-70's in which countless jazz greats including Joe Zawinul, Quincy Jones, John Abercrombie, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bill Frisell and Branford Marsalis got their careers started.

He has since served as an invited lecturer at New World School For The Arts, University of Florida/Miami-Dade College, Miami FL, and at Berklee College of Music as well as participated in ensemble clinics at Colegio Ward and Centro Cultural San Martin, Buenos Aires, Argentina.


Former students of Mr. Hostfalt have been accepted into music and peforming arts programs at Manhattan School of Music, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, New York City, The Special Music School High School at Kaufman Music Center NYC, Frank Sinatra School of The Arts NYC, Eastman School of Music, SUNY Purchase, Berklee College of Music, Bard College, Western Illinois University, University of Chicago, New York City's Third Street Settlement and Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls. Sten Hostfalts former Royal College of Music, Stockholm ( Kungliga Musikhogskolan ) students ( 2001-05 ) are among Europes most active and successful musicians, continuously appearing at premier concert venues and being favorably featured in leading music press and media worldwide.

As a long-time educational fixture in Manhattans Midtown and Downtown East Village, New York City Mr. Hostfalt's musical expertise have also been sought out by students enrolled at prime New York City institutions for higher education including Juilliard School of Music, New York University, Columbia University, Mannes School of Music, Rockefeller University and Fiorello LaGuardia High School for Music, Arts and Performing Arts. As well as premier U.S. East Coast academic institutions Brown University and Berklee College Of Music.
His longtime commitment to coaching music professionals have included on-offs with members of independent and major label acts The Strokes, Afghan Whigs, Okkervil River, Titus Andronicus, La Otracina and Barnum & Baileys Ringling Bros. Circus.

With former NYC teaching assignments including multi-genre and multi-string instrument instruction at First Flight Music School, East Village ( 2007-15 ) Kingsbridge International High School, Bronx ( 2010 ) and Queensborough Youth Conservatory, through Queensbourough Community College's * office of continuing education ( 2010 ) Sten Hostfalt is currently also, since the 2009 inception a faculty member of New York Jazz Academy, described by the worlds premier jazz publication, Down Beat as one of New York's fastest growing music schools, and where he has helped students of all ages and from just about everywhere in the world get introduced to jazz and the New York music scene, as well as participated in assisting recent academic music school graduates starting out as educators, and twice appeared in student-faculty concerts at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. www.nyjazzacademy.com
